Our gifts are directly linked to our Purpose and I want to encourage each of you reading this today, to spend time knowing your gifts and understanding the purpose and reason for your gifts.
An online dictionary says that a gift is:
- something given voluntarily without payment in return, as to show favor toward someone, honor an occasion, or make a gesture of assistance; present.
- something bestowed or acquired without any particular effort by the recipient or without its being earned: Those extra points he got in the game were a total gift.
- a special ability or capacity; natural endowment; talent: the gift of saying the right thing at the right time.
So in summary a gift is something that you receive without payment- whether you deserved it or not, whether you have earned it or. It is free and it is given to you without the expectation of payment. It is a gift.
The scripture says in Proverbs 18:16 that our gifts will make room for us.
New King James Version
A man’s gift makes room for him, And brings him before great men.
New Living Translation
Giving a gift can open doors; it gives access to important people!
A man’s gift [given in love or courtesy] makes room for him And brings him before great men.
This means that our gifts will open the right doors for us, it will enlarge our territory, it will open up new opportunities for us to be a blessing. It will bring us into increase. And then secondly, our gifts will bring us before great men, i.e. men and women of influence and authority. It will bring us before kings and queens, presidents, men and women in ministry, leadership, CEOs, etc., which may even include famous, notable and distinguished people.
And there is a reason why you need to come before these people. God has a plan and a purpose for your life that only you can do. And sometimes these plans are so big that we will need the support from men and women of influence and authority to help bring these plans to pass.
It’s important to know that there are natural gifts and then there are spiritual gifts. And God gives us both. He gives us talents and abilities that are unique to us and we’ve been gifted with it since birth. Each and everyone has received giftings and talents that only we can do.
Our natural gift is an ability or strength or competence or skill that comes naturally to us. Yes we can refine and improve our skills. It’s important to improve our skills, as improving our skills will enable us to do it well. A well-developed skill can make us master in a particular field, and it can be learned too. Learning new skills will help you in your professional life/career. It will help you to achieve your goals, give you confidence, and give you motivation for working too.
In my personal life I’ve learnt that when I work on improving my skills and growing my knowledge base, it gives me the confidence that I need to overcome the fear and anxiety that’s tried to hold me in succeeding in a particular area. Improving on your skills is also a rewarding and fruitful experience. And as I look at my professional life and especially over the past few months, I realise that unbeknownst to me at the time until recently, my gifts brought me before great men and women in positions of leadership and influence and my gifts continues to open the right doors for me. So God’s Word is true, Our gifts will open doors for us and give us access to important people!
